Biodegradable means a material will eventually break down through microbial action — but there is no defined timeframe or end condition. Compostable is a certified, regulated subset: packaging must break down within 90–180 days under specified industrial or home compost conditions, leaving no toxic residue or microplastics. EN 13432, ASTM D6400 and OK Compost (TÜV Austria) are the certifications that prove compostability.

Yes, with the right structure selection. PLA-based and kraft + PLA laminates offer the barrier performance required for hygiene products like sanitary pads, wet wipes and baby care items. Some compostable structures have lower moisture and oxygen barrier than conventional foil laminates — our application engineers will specify the right structure based on your product's fill weight and shelf-life requirements.

Tansox supplies compostable structures certified to EN 13432 (European industrial compostability), ASTM D6400 (US compostability) and TÜV Austria OK Compost Industrial and Home marks. Specific certifications depend on the material selected.
